The B O O K has arrived

The book has finally arrived. I have many envelopes and a trusty pen and they're on their way to those who have pre-ordered. Thank you.

Here's the opening chapter ...

Y O U ' R E
N O T
R O B   S N A R S K I

said the young boy staring up at me. He sounded certain, looked slightly puzzled and more than a little disappointed by my existence.

‘Yes, I am. It’s just I’ve gone and grown a moustache and I’m wearing glasses,’ I responded, not exactly sounding sure of myself.

‘No. You’re not Rob Snarski,’ he repeated, convinced I wasn’t me, staring deep past my spectacles.

It was an awkward, perplexing moment and this little kid was making me feel just a tad anxious. Maybe I’m not Rob Snarski …but then again, why am I standing here in the middle of Readings Bookstore, Carlton, with a guitar slung over my shoulder, singing songs from Wounded Bird and Low Fidelity, alongside the travel section, on a makeshift stage whilst everyone else is sampling the free wine and flicking through the CD racks grazing for a new purchase.

After I sang six songs or so, trying to convince myself I was who I thought I was, the boy again came up to me. 'Okay, you are Rob Snarski. Thanks for singing “The Black Caress”, that’s my favourite Then he followed with some quick-fire questions: ‘What’s your favourite song? Who’s your favourite band? Are you your favourite singer?’ Woah, let me have a think about all that.

He told me he liked Queen and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was his favourite song of all time (hmm, quite an epic for a lad of ten, I thought). His mother and I then began chatting, discussing the possibility of an acoustic house concert, and before I had the chance to notice, everyone else in the shop who’d come to hear some songs had drifted off into the night and I remained standing there, wondering if I was who I think I am.

B O O K release YOU'RE NOT ROB SNARSKI / CRUMBS FROM THE CAKE

Greetings

I'm not exactly sure how this has happened but I've managed to write a book, not a very large book but a book all the same.

Glimpses, recollections, images from my past and present. Music, pets, family and work ... things I thought worthy of sharing and a way of remembering.

There's a lot of images taken the Snarski Family Archives as well as fine photographs from Denise Nestor, Scott Wajon, Andrew Watson, L.J. Spruyt, Tim McNeilage and my friends, thankfully not all of me.

If you're interested in pre-ordering a signed copy just head here ...

'You're Not Rob Snarski' is released in early February 2017.

Thanks again.

R x

From Melbourne to Europe and all points in between, Rob Snarski shares his observations and insights from the music world he has performed in, the people he has worked with, his family, the domesticated animals he has loved, and the things he’s had to do to pay the rent.

Snarski has played in seminal Australian bands since the 1980s: Chad’s Tree, The Blackeyed Susans, and as a guest singer with The Triffids. These recollections and photographs uncover a delicate humour in the man who remains a dedicated follower of music and the musicians he’s been influenced by.

Author's Note:

I never intended to write a book. Never intended to compile short snippets of recollections and find appropriate photographs to sit beside them within a paper framework. A book was never part of the plan. I’d barely scraped through English in the final years of high school; comprehension was never a favourite of mine.

All this came about through a friend who read some of my reminiscing one morning on social media and insisted I send it on to a publisher he knew.

The majority of these recollections were written on a train or a plane, in a hotel room or airport lounge. There’s something about being in motion, in-between places that helps jolt my memory. Random thoughts spill out when I’m travelling from home in the hills of Tecoma to my part-time day jobs in town or when flying out from Melbourne to other destinations for music.

There are some chapters within that are possibly too private. I grappled with the notion of including them, precariously I let go, I’m still not quite sure why.

The collection is sporadic, arbitrary with a gap or two. They are my memories of events and I imagine may differ slightly to others present at the time. I couldn’t simply write about all things music and only music, as other experiences and beings shape my existence.

Are You The Lover Or The Loved?

Well, they say good things come to those who wait and haven’t you been waiting a while! But we have news for you! Lots of news! Read on, read on…

THE BLACKEYED SUSANS LAUNCH NEW SINGLE 'LOVER OR THE LOVED' AT ANNUAL MELBOURNE CHRISTMAS SHOWS

'LOVER OR THE LOVED' OUT FRIDAY 2 DECEMBER

The Blackeyed Susans announce the release of their new single 'Lover or the Loved' on Friday 2 December. The new single will be officially launched at their annual Christmas shows on Friday 16 December at the Caravan Music Club, Oakleigh (joined by The Thin White Ukes) and Saturday 17 December at the Spotted Mallard, Brunswick (with Special Guest Angie Hart). They also play a family friendly matinee show on Sunday 18 December at the Spotted Mallard, (again joined by The Thin White Ukes).

'Lover or the Loved' is the first release from The Blackeyed Susans long awaited new album 'Close Your Eyes and See', out in 2017. Against a backdrop of pulsating rhythms and curling guitar lines, the song explores the dynamics of love. It's classic Susans, with Rob Snarski crooning his way through a Phil Kakulas lyric that asks more questions than it answers:

Are you the lover or the loved?
Are you the one below or the one above?
Are you the one who loves too much or not enough?
Are you the lover or the loved?

We all want to be loved, right? Well, The Susans aren't so sure. Engulfed by a starless sky and imbued with an existential ache, 'Lover or the Loved' builds towards a somewhat surprising and compelling conclusion. We can't wait for the album.

Amidst the tinsel and the Christmas lights, The Susans will play sneak previews from the forthcoming album, as well as the best of their back catalogue and some choice Christmas classics too. Come and celebrate the birth of little baby Jesus in style with The Blackeyed Susans this December!

Oct TRIFFIDS EUROPE / This Sunday COBURG

I'm lucky enough to be heading off to Europe in October but before I go I'm playing a couple of shows.

This Sunday Sept 18 at The Post Office Hotel in sunny Coburg with the impeccably dressed, maestro of guitar Shane O'Mara and then a solo show at:

Bella Union, Carlton on Wednesday Oct 5.

This Sunday is free, 5-7pm and you'll find The Post Office Hotel at 229-231 Sydney Rd, Coburg, Victoria.

There is no doubt as a young person in the '80s I saw The Triffids more than any other band from my youth. There was a time I'd see every show when they returned to WA from the eastern states, and also in Sydney (when I'd relocated there with Chad's Tree) whenever they returned home from Europe for an Australian tour.

I've been invited to be one of the guest singers with the band on several tours over the last decade and in October we head off to Europe for some shows; playing the songs from "Born Sandy Devotional" and celebrating the life and song writing of friend David McComb.

18/10/16 Paradiso AMSTERDAM

21/10/16 Assembly Hall LONDON

23/10/16 AB BRUSSELS

In December The Triffids return to Melbourne and will be performing at The Meredith Music Festival and some side shows at The Corner Hotel. Check relevant websites for details friends.

In the meantime, see you out there, somewhere.

SNARSKI AND MIKELANGELO - Melb, Syd, Canberra, Bathurst...

Mikelangelo and I first met in 1997. Mikel was lying in a coffin dressed as Elvis and I was gazing down at his seemingly lifeless body singing at him… it was just a little surreal.

Fast forward 20 years and we’re performing our first double headline shows together in the heart of winter.

MAY Thornbury/ Brisbane/ St.Kilda

Thank you all for coming along to the Croxton Park Hotel, Thornbury throughout April ... it's been getting quite busy there, thankfully no-one has trodden on a toddler. The publican there has been understandably chuffed with the shows and the handsome turnout so they've extended the season for the entire month of MAY. Hope some of you can make it down for one or two. Sundays 4:30-6:30pm, family friendly and free ...

I head up to BRISBANE this Friday with JP Shilo as support for the launch of alt-country giants HALFWAY's new album "The Golden Halfway Record" at The Triffid in Newstead. The lads recorded in Nashville with lauded producer Mark Nevers (Calexico/Bonnie Prince Billy/George Jones) and have been receiving 5* reviews in music papers throughout the country. We also support them at the Northcote Social Club on Friday, May 13.

There's also a massive show coming up at MEMO in St Kilda featuring the alumni of the Melbourne music-sphere. Fearless songs brought to you by Liberty Victoria Sunday May 8 from 3pm.

May is looking really busy, hopefully see you out there, somewhere ... Rx

Sundays in April / Thornbury

I've been a bit quiet on the music front of late. Now out of the blue I have four shows for the next four Sundays in the front bar of The Croxton Park Hotel, Thornbury. All free and kid friendly 4:30-6:30pm... two sets. Yes, Rock at the Croc, or in my case roll and rattle a bit.

The first two Sundays I'll be joined by that enchanting musical conjurer JP SHILO and the last two by that dapper gent & guitar maestro SHANE O'MARA. There'll be a sprinkling of Wounded Bird and Low Fidelity tunes, tap-dancing and sorcery.

Here's a few pics of things.

A car I like... the steering wheel has my initials therefore it must belong to me.

Some pics from the Fremantle Arts Centre earlier in the year. Thanks to all who came along.

I happened to be in Perth for four days in a row of 42°. Lovely.

I was also lucky enough to sing with The Triffids at the HOME concert which opened the Perth International Festival with a cast of thousands.

Oh, I still have my moustache.

See you for a Sunday in April at The Croxton Hotel 607 High St, Thornbury.

Perth / Melb FEBRUARY

Firstly thanks to all who came along to the Sydney Festival show to see The Blackeyed Susans (with strings). Sensational to see a full house and an aural pleasure to have string arrangements augmenting the songs. Truly wonderful, thanks KB..!

Next stop Perth. I've again been invited to sing with The Triffids who are performing at Perth Festival along with many other incredible acts. It's been several years since I've had the opportunity of joining the band and I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a big night, allocation exhausted ... but for those who have tickets I'll see you there at Chevron Gardens on Mon Feb 15.

Prior to this mammoth event I'm slotting in a solo show at Fremantle Arts Centre as part of their series of free Sunday summer concerts in their grounds and gardens on Valentine's Day. Support comes from off-kilter protopunk band The Shops. Details here.

One more show to mention and that's back in Melbourne at a venue I'm still yet to step into but I've only heard good things. It's the grand old dame of Fairfield, The Grandview Hotel at 429 Heidelberg Rd on Saturday February 20. Tickets can be purchased here. Dinner and show tickets are also available by phoning The Grandview on 9489-8061.

Thanks to those who have come along to gigs.

Here's a little video the people at MOTH put together when I was down in Red Hill earlier in the year, with my pooch Booboo and musical pal Charlie Owen lending a hand on the dobro.

Cheers

Shows for 2016 plus Sydney Susans, Perth Triffids

Firstly, thanks to all of you who came along to the shows, bought a CD, a snow-dome or a tea towel, held an acoustic house concert (yes, I still do them) and generally supported me throughout the year, it's been remarkable.

"Low Fidelity" was an unexpected pleasure to tour and to have guitar maestro Shane O'Mara hop on board for the shows was simply a joy.

I'm starting the year with a flurry of shows of all shapes and sizes. I'm looking at this list thinking I must have lost the plot. So much to do, so little time.

Firstly, if you find yourself holidaying on the Mornington Peninsula over the break I'm performing in Red Hill at MOTH on Fri Jan 1 ... for those who won't be too hungover from New Years celebrations the night before you can find the details here.

Sundays at The Post Office Hotel in Coburg is a good way to ease into any week. I'm there with Shane O'Mara on Sunday Jan 3

Kyneton anyone..?
Sat Jan 9
Lovely spot is Major Tom's Cafe ... The stars look very different today ...

The Blackeyed Susans head to Sydney for a show with strings at The Spiegeltent. Promising to be our biggest show for sometime and quite a while since we've played NSW.
Sun Jan 17

I'm also a guest with The Triffids in Perth, tickets are selling fast for this one ...
Mon Feb 15

There's always Valentine's Day in Fremantle too ... the day before
Sunday Feb 14

I always drive past this pub but this time I'll go in.

Sat Feb 20 at The Grandview, Fairfield ...dinner and show tickets available

Have a wonderful festive break and all the best for 2016 ... hopefully see you out there ... somewhere.

Last shows for Low Fidelity

"You're not Rob Snarski" said the young boy.

"Yes I am. It's just I've gone and grown a moustache and I'm wearing glasses," I answered.

"No. You're not Rob Snarski" he repeated, convinced I wasn't me, looking deep past my spectacles.

It was an awkward, perplexing moment and this little kid was making me feel a tad anxious.

Maybe I'm not Rob Snarski ... but then again why am I here if I'm not? Standing in the middle of Readings, Carlton, with my guitar slung over my shoulder singing amongst the travel books, whilst everyone else is sampling the free wine and flicking through the CD racks.

After I sang 6 songs or so, trying to convince myself I was someone who actually sings songs every so often, the boy came up to me again.

"Ok you are Rob Snarski. Thanks for singing The Black Caress".

Then he followed with some quick-fire questions ... "What's your favourite song? ... Who's your favourite band? ... Are you your favourite singer?"

Woah, let me have think about that.

His mother and I were chatting, discussing my acoustic house concerts and then before I knew it everyone else in the shop who'd come to hear some tunes had dispersed and I remained there wondering if I was who I think I am.

Well friends, the final shows for The Low Fidelity tour take place in October just before I head overseas ... and also finish off some recording duties with The Blackeyed Susans.

In Melbourne & Adelaide guitar maestro and charmer Shane O'Mara again shares the stage. I'm in solo mode in Brisbane at the spooky, yet glorious Junk Bar.

WA SHOWS AUG 28 & 29 FREMANTLE/PERTH

So finally, we're heading to WA to launch the new LOW FIDELITY CD.

Looking forward to seeing all my pals in Fremantle and Mt. Lawley. I have fond memories of some pretty enthusiastic foot stomping encores at The Astor last time for the "Wounded Bird" tour so I'm hoping we can provide the same musical moments to garner a similar response for the songs from LOW FIDELITY (SONGS BY REQUEST VOLUME 1 - covering Lou Reed to Pulp, Glen Campbell to Nina Simone, Spiritualized to Lee Hazelwood and much, much more) ... no doubt we'll be playing songs from WOUNDED BIRD too.

The tour has been going very, very well. Recently we've had a sellout show in Adelaide, a cracking show at the Caravan Music Club in Melbourne and a wonderful in-store at Basement Discs CBD with Pat Monaghan MC-ing the event ... so fingers crossed there'll be a few familiar faces at the shows in WA in late August.

My musical partner in crime this time around is guitar maestro Shane O'Mara, he's played with everyone from Paul Kelly to Edwyn Collins, Chris Wilson, The Audreys and to his own Rebecca's Empire and also produced countless recordings ... a lovely chap and a tremendous musician.

Thanks to y'all for coming along to the LOW FIDELITY shows over last weekend in Melbourne and Adelaide.

Note to self - best to have seated venues for people of our vintage - I felt for you all standing there with drink in hand at the Northcote Social Club for what seemed like a rather lengthy show.

I have another show in Melbourne this Friday at the glorious Caravan Music Club (fast becoming my favourite venue in the Southern Hemisphere) accompanied again by accomplished guitar guy Shane O'Mara.

It's a slightly earlier gig with our set starting around 9:40pm and Jess Ribiero kicking off about 8:30pm.

Tickets still available here if you're keen ...

Tickets are also now on sale for Fremantle, Perth and Brisbane.

LOW FIDELITY (Songs By Request Volume 1) CDs Arrived & Album Launches

The Low Fidelity CDs have arrived and are looking and sounding swell even if I do say so myself. It'll be interesting to see what your favourite track will be given it's such a musical mixed bag. Will it be the late, great Fred Neil track 'Dolphins' or Lee Hazlewood's subtlety psychedelic offering 'Come On Home To Me' or one of the classics... 'Witchita Lineman' or 'Wild Is The Wind' ... maybe something more contemporary Pulp or Spiritualized ... time will tell.

You can order the CD directly from here and I'll post it out promptly.

Should be in the shops by Friday also.

Just a little reminder Sydney is only two weeks away with the launch at The Vanguard in Newtown, Friday July 3 with special guests JEP & DEP fresh from their European jaunt.

Tickets available here.

I'm really looking forward to singing these songs live and playing with Shane O'Mara, so hopefully we'll see you about the traps.

Cheers,

Rob x

LOW FIDELITY (Songs By Request Volume 1) about to hit the shelves

A recording made at home primarily on my iPhone... who would've thought I'd like it so much I'd be releasing it? Is this the new recording frontier..?

LOW FIDELITY (Songs By Request Volume 1) is about to hit the shelves and I just want to say a big thanks to all who supported this project. It's been a real joy. The original recordings were taken to Yikesville Studios for embellishment and tweaking, with Shane O'Mara adding guitar bits here and there, a simple EQ and a touch of reverb... it's sounding pretty sweet to these ears. Mastered by Mikey Young too.

From Pulp to Glen Campbell, Spiritualized to Nina Simone, Edwyn Collins to Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell to Chad's Tree... LOW FIDELITY is being manufactured as I write. The tour is in place with master guitarist/producer Shane O'Mara so we'll be visiting a town near you real soon.

You can sample three tracks now. Here's what the track listing looks like too... and the list of people who requested tunes.

If you're keen to pre-order your copy just click here... and I'll pop it in the post as soon as they land... promise.

Here's where the launches take place around the country too... so come along if you're free.

Working on where to play in Brisbane... any suggestions most welcome, though I do love The Junk Bar.

The Vanguard NEWTOWN 3 July
Festival of Voices HOBART 10 July
Festival of Voices PORT ARTHUR 11 July
Northcote Social Club NORTHCOTE 25 July
Wheatsheaf Hotel THEBARTON 26 July (early 5-7pm)
Caravan Music Club OAKLEIGH 31 July
The Odd Fellow FREMANTLE 28 August
Astor Lounge MT LAWLEY 29 August

All ticketing details can be found here.

Happy listening Rx

PS. Btw Edwyn Collins tweeted how much he liked our cover of "Graciously" ... gotta say that made me pretty happy.

Susans & Snarski News

The Blackeyed Susans are heading into the studio to work on an album with Dan Luscombe back on board. Some songs have been staples in the set list for a time but there are some other gems hidden away beneath the surface. Dan has been busy with Courtney Barnett and The Drones so we're looking forward to a few tales and some interesting production ideas.

Meanwhile Rob is about to embark on a tour with producer/guitarist Shane O'Mara. After the successful pledge campaign that brought together 'Wounded Bird' another project beckoned.

'Low Fidelity' is a collection of song requests from fans and friends, recorded on his iphone in the hills of Tecoma and embellished at Yikesville Studio by Shane O'Mara... from Pulp to Lee Hazelwood, Glen Campbell to Spiritualized, Edwyn Collins to Chad's Tree ... it's a musical mixed bag.

Check out July dates on this poster (artwork by Fiona McMonagle).

In the meanwhile Rob heads to Darwin this weekend to play The Railway Club on Sunday May 24 and then heads to Newcastle on Thursday June 4 to perform at Lizotte's.

Cheers y'all...!
